Charming lady of the Drina river - Ljubovija

Ljubovija- Paw traveller

When we left for Ljubovia, I didn't expect anything, so maybe that's why I got so much. I don't know how to describe what delighted me so much in this part of Serbia, but the excitement was certainly awakened by the river Drina.

Ljubovija is beautiful, so ordinary but warmhearted and friendly because of the people who live there. Just like that, as soon as you step into the streets of Ljubovija, you feel welcome as if you are a part of this small town, almost like a local.

Ljubovija is for those travelers who enjoy being by the water, for those who like an active vacation with fishing or rafting, but still like to have access to urban facilities.

For true adventurers who push the boundaries, nearby is the canyon of the river Trešnjica, a natural asset of exceptional importance, where you can see griffon vultures, which, apart from here, are only living in the canyon of Uvac. The second most important inhabitant of this canyon is the fish Huchen or Balkan salmon that comes here every spring to spawn.

The town itself is nice and tidy with nice cafes and shops, very small and you can walk around it all on foot.

In the very center is the old stone church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, a building of beautiful architecture with a well-maintained courtyard.

And then, the Drina river... beautiful, cold, emerald transparent, surrounded by lush greenery - like a paradise garden. There are occasions when nature truly surprises us and makes us realize how small we are and reminds us that the greatest artist of the universe is herself. That"s what you are going to feel here.

And you will feel peace and connection with nature, and the river Drina will make you realize that it is a privilege to witness its beauty and that there is nothing more spectacular than that at the very moment.

In the vicinity of Ljubovija, there are a large number of log cabins for rent, which are located right on the banks of the Drina river. You can swim, you can fish, you can walk as long as your feet will carry you, or just indulge in your philosophical thoughts on a pebble in the shallows. Whatever you enjoy, it's just important to surrender to nature.

If you decide to visit Ljubovija, set aside at least two or three days because it has a lot to offer.

Except for fishing and rafting, hiking through the canyon of the Trešnjica river, visit the monastery of St. Nicholas above which Soko Grad rises. Don't miss stopping by Vrhpolje and trying typical Serbian dishes.

Ljubovija has everything but enough people and it's a real shame that for various reasons people are leaving this area. Although it is a bit numb, the people who stayed are kind and simple as if they are your family, and that is the most important thing because, in addition to the natural beauty of this region, it was these warm-hearted people that made us to wish to come here again.

Paw traveller Planning a holiday on your own can be a hassle for someone and a challenge and joy for someone else.  We have been traveling for years by finding accommodation on our own , asking questions directly to the accommodation providers and negotiating prices. Long time ago we choose this method primarily to find exactly what we needed, and also because of the fact that the Paw traveller group is made up of two four-legged travellers, which we do not always but often take with us on holidays. If you are also taking your furry friend with you, read the post  Responsible Guest- May your DOG recommend you? In this search for the perfect accommodation that will satisfy specific taste of your hairy companion, the   Pet friendly map of Greece  may also be helpful. Jamas! - Tastes of Greece - RETSINA wine

Retsina - a Greek wine with a long tradition which is mainly produced from Savatiano, a not very well-known grape variety characterized by an extremely high percentage of sugar in the grape seed. Paw traveller Retsina is a wine that people have been drinking since ancient times. S ince they did not have cooling methods they used resin to seal the amphorae in which they kept the wine, which resulted in the authentic and unusual taste of this drink. Although Greece today produces exciting wines from Asyrtiko, Xinomavro, and other grape varieties, there are still growers throughout central Greece with large Savatiano vineyards and a market for retsina -   the wine produced from it. This wine is characterized by the fact that it is produced with the addition of pine resin during fermentation, which gives it a strong and specific smell and taste. Retsina wine is not expensive and it is worth trying, especially since it is rare in our area, but there is no guarantee that you will...
