Janda in Srem, Serbia - Needlepoint embroidered in all shades of green and blue

Lush vegetation, the mighty Danube, bountiful vineyards, and the legend of the sad love of two young people who firmly decided that when they can no longer live, they will be together forever, even in death. Yes, it's all Janda!

Where is Janda?

Janda- Paw traveller
Janda is waiting for you at the foot of Koševac hill on a slope that reaches the very bank of the river Danube. A bit sleepy but rustically beautiful in its original way.

It reminds us of what most of us, while we were chasing urban facilities, cafes, restaurants, a well-organized promenades...for the weekend, forgot that it exists and that it can be pleasant and relaxing to spend a day in a village without facilities, surrounded only by nature, lush greenery teeming with life, birds and wild animals.

Janda is a paradise for those who love long and endless nature walks, but also for fishermen and cyclists, and all those who have an exploratory spirit.

There is nothing on Janda. There are no well-maintained roads, shops, or cafes...only paths and dense vegetation, which has an extremely invigorating effect on the body.

Sleeping beauty, homemade rakia, and Krčedin

The place itself is a weekend settlement, but some people live there permanently. They are kind and willing to exchange a few words with unexpected passers-by, give some advice, and point in a certain direction. You can buy homemade wine and rakia, and some of them also offer honey and blueberries.

The climbs themselves, if you decide to walk, are not particularly demanding, but you must have some fitness. You can make a circle of about four kilometers along Cvetna Street, which starts just below the radar on Koševac, and return to Bagremova Street to the starting point, or, taking a slightly longer route, continue on the road over Krčedinski Breg- a nice little town with cottages surrounded by well-maintained yards, all the way to Krčedin.

If you have the ambition to cast your rod and try your luck at fishing, you can go down to small Janda, where the tame banks of the river Danube and a large sandy beach await you. Well, whatever your heart desires!

Janda and Suleiman the Magnificent

Wear comfortable shoes, bring refreshments, turn off your mobile phone, relax and just enjoy the walk and the sounds of nature. On all sides, there are vineyards facing the Danube, which in this area in Srem on the soil under which the clay and loess are full of minerals, have been thriving since the Roman period.

And Janda like Janda, looks like fell asleep and whispers her story about the tragic love of two young people, after which this place got its name. According to one legend, at the time when Suleiman the Magnificent conquered Belgrade, he gave Janja Pasha to manage the area of Slankamen, and he founded his personal guard for that purpose. He gathered strong guys, uncouth and prone to alcohol and women, because of which the locals sheltered all their female members and bent over in various ways to keep them safe.

Hajduk Janko and the beautiful Rada - the legend behind the name of the place

So the parents of Rada, a girl widely known for her gorgeous beauty and piercing black eyes, in order to hide her from Suleiman's henchmen, cleverly dressed up their darling daughter and disguised her as an old woman. But somehow Suleiman found out what they did and ordered his army to capture her and bring her to his harem in Belgrade, which they did.

Hajduk Janko, Rada's boyfriend, steadfast and brave, dressed up as a merchant and left for Belgrade, determined to save his beloved. One day Rada saw him from the window of the harem wandering around and looking for her in the surrounding alleys.

Seeing her lover, this ingenuous black-eyed beauty tricked Suleiman into letting her go out to buy silk for a new dress to make herself even more beautiful, and ran away with her lover.

When they were near the Danube, Suleiman's army began to catch up with them, so Janko stopped to fight with them so that his beloved Rada could escape and return home. Soon the soldiers surrounded and killed Janko, so the place where he came from, which is located between Slankamenački Vinogradi and Krčedin, was named after this romantic hero - Janda.

 Čarnok field hides a secret

While he was dying, with his last strength he called out to his beloved Rada to escape by boat across the Danube. And she crossed the Danube in the hope of meeting her Janko there, but when this black-eyed young woman saw that her beloved was dead and Suleiman with his army on the other bank will continue to chase her, she plunged a knife into her heart. So the field on the bank of the Danube near Janda was named Čarnok after her.

Well, if your adventurous spirit has awakened, take a walk through the mystical Janda, pass through the Čarnok field, and also visit the surrounding towns of Krčedin, Stari Slankamen, and Slankamenački Vinogradi.

Give yourself a space to feel something new and different, indulge yourself at least for one day in the slow-life way of life, and of course, enjoy!
