My first touch with Greece was Zakynthos, a phenomenal island with amazing scenery, beautiful villages and great beaches.
And yes, I had prejudices because I heard that this island is mostly for young people looking for a crazy night life, that there are many drunk Englishmen who are wandering around until dawn and other things like that…
But anyway, we arranged accommodation in Tsilivi through the tourist agency Mediteraneo, and headed by car to this island, which is about 1250 km far from Belgrade (about 1200 km to the town of Kilini by land, and from Kilini to Zakynthos, about 19.5 nautical miles by sea).
Tourist agency Mediteraneo lasts for a long time and is a true expert in organizing travels to Greece. They have custom, reasonable rates and great last minute deals.
I can only say that Zakynhtos has delighted us, and if you are planning a trip to Greece this island should definitely be at the top of your wishlist.
Zakynthos is fantastic destination regardless of your taste, as this island has something for everyone and for all generations.
We left Belgrade at half past ten in the evening and reach Zakynthos about noon the next day. Journey to Zakynthos is not complicated and can be crossed in one piece, but I still recommend that if you have a day more to spend, split this journey in two and take an overnight break somewhere.
Along this route you will have unique experience of crossing the Rio Antirio Bridge.
This hanging bridge is 2880 meters long and connects the mainland Greece with the Peloponnese.
Rio Antirio is one of the longest bridges of this type in the world and in itself is unique and magnificent sight.
Tsilivi is a small town with a beautiful sandy beach, about 4 km away from the city of Zakynthos, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and gardens full of fruit trees.
This is a popular place for family vacations thanks to the large, sandy beach with shallow waters and excellent restaurants, cafes and bars in the surrounding area.
You can find everything in the center of Tsilivi.
There are exchange offices, post office, travel agencies, super markets, rentacar agencies, gift shops ...
Tsilivi offers a wide selection of cafes and restaurants that have rich restaurant menus not only from traditional greek, but also from other cuisines of the world. There are also several fast food restaurants.
Some restaurants and cafes also offer original Greek experiences like live Greek traditional music, singing and dancing.
We have been on Tsilivi beach only two or three times because we wanted to visit as much as possible while we are on the island, and although it is a decent beach, it is not in the top ten. The beach is long, sandy, with warm and clear waters. It is organized and has plenty of sunbrellas and deck chairs, and there are many tavernas along the beach.
If you enjoy water sports you can try surfing, water skiing, sea parachuting and banana.
Zakynthos is emblazed with steep cliffs, lush vegetation, beautiful villages, numerous bays and the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea.
This is a true paradise for all lovers of swimming and spending time on the sun, for all those who love to explore and visit beautiful and interesting villages, to visit churches and to enjoy long walks through the unspoiled nature.
Exploring and touring the island requires a car or a motorcycle that will allow you to quickly and easily reach all beaches and sights.
Zakynthos most popular beach is Navagio, also known as the smuggler's bay.
This beach is surounded by high, steep cliffs and can only be reached from the sea.
We decided to take a smaller boat that accommodates seven, eight people and departs from Agios Nicolaos, but there are also larger boats that drives to this beach and are a slightly more affordable option.
On this beach you will also find the most popular photo motif of the island - ship wreck.
In my opinion, you will have a better view and a better perspective of this beach from the platform high above the steep rocks that can be reached by car.
Navagio beach is more a place for sightseeing and photo sesions than for relaxing and swimming, but it is certainly an attraction that must be visited and experienced.
On our way back from this beach we also visited Blue caves, which are a real pearl of nature. As the ship was smaller, it could approach caves and set under the rocks itself. The water is crystal clear and deep and swimming is a real experience.
Blue caves are one of the most famous natural attractions on the island and attract thousands of visitors every year.
They are located just below the lighthouse on Cape Skinari.
The caves owe their name to the blue waters inside of them, that lures you to swim in.
Blue caves can only be visited by a boat.
Small boats like the one we chose are great because they pass through the caves, while larger boats can only approach caves from the outside.
There are many boat trips to the blue caves that you can choose and you can board at different places around the island.
As we mentioned, we embarked on this adventure from Agios Nicolaos.
